Tags and how they differ from categories

December 09, 2008

As you might have noticed when visiting the blog section we are now using "Tags". Tags differ from categories and significantly help with Search Engine Marketing. Not only do they provide usefulness to Search Engines, they can also provide powerful functionality to blog visitors.

Categories should be very broad in nature and consist of a large number of blog entries. For example some categories would be:

  • General News
  • Press Releases
  • Web Design
  • Web Marketing

These general categories help separate the "chapters" of our blog, or the areas in which we write content. Tags are much more specific, think about them as you would a highlighter reading a text book. You would mark all the important text throughout all the chapters.

Tags are a powerful way to quickly find several blog posts that are not tied to a category but discuss a precise subject or discuss certain keywords. With this we find the connection to the Search Engines. How nice of us to place all the relevant content the Search Engines might be looking for in a nice bundled section of keywords.

So don't forget the Tags, if you plan any type of content based search engine marketing effort!
