Purchasing a Domain for Your Website

July 30, 2009

If you decide to have a website built for your company or business but you’re not sure what domain name to use, than please continue reading. These days there are a lot of factors that go into purchasing a domain name. Some of the big factors are price, availability, branding, and local or non local.

Availability is a big factor these days because the domain name market is pretty much saturated. This means that a lot of the premium domain names have already been purchased, that’s why you see a lot of sites these days with weird names such as flickr or tumblr. If you have a common name for a business such as Stone Flooring or Texas Landscaping then you might have to shell out some dough to buy a domain that matches your company’s exact name. If you have a tight budget then you can always change up the domain to something like stoneflooringonline.com or txland-scaping.com. It really depends on how bad you want the domain and if it’s already being used by another party.

Being able to brand your name is another issue. A good branding domain should be two to three words such as stoneflooring.com or txlandscaping.com. This comes into play in your advertising campaign, for example. If you were to implement a print advertising campaign and you placed your website on the advertisement you would want it to be short and easy to remember. It would be difficult to place a domain such as texaslandscapingonlinecompany.com inside the advertisement. It would be possible but would look somewhat ridiculous.

Having a local or non-local domain reflects the type of business the company is in. If your company caters to a local market such as San Antonio, then you might want to consider having San Antonio in your domain. This will help out tremendously with search engine rankings. So if you’re a San Antonio flooring company then a good domain would be sanantonioflooring.com because when someone does a search for San Antonio flooring company in Google, your website will have a better chance of showing up in the top results.

If your company is not local and maybe ships products nationwide and you’re only an online store, then it makes more sense to purchase a domain that relates to your products or services. For example, if you sell toasters then some good domains would be toastersonline.com, yourtoaster.com or toasterworld.com.

I hope this blog gives you a better idea of what to think about when purchasing your first or next domain. Please check back frequently for more web marketing blogs.
